The Big Move: pt 1

So the time has come that I’m actually working on moving the site to a better host where I have more control, more options, and hopefully a better experiance all together. Right now, my other site ( We Void Warranties ) is being hosted over at DreamHost.com and Ive had a great experiance with them so far. I found this promo code on LifeHacker.com that saved me over $150! The promo code 222 brings the cost of unlimited hosting plus one domain registration down from about $220 to around $65 for two years.

Anywho, here’s the schedule for the next week or so:
SATURDAY: 5pm EST – thelostchinese.org will completely shut down, including ma and FTP servers.
SATURDAY: 10pm EST – mail servers will hopefully be back up before then and new FTP servers will be up.
SUNDAY: 1amEST – some kind of placeholder will be up for thelostchinese.org and thelostchinese.com. Possibly a new rss address.
MONDAY: 5pmEST – site back up, fully functional.

Just bought that domain!

WeVoidWarranties.com is going to be where to find tech stuff once I get it up and running. Hopefully, it’ll be run by me and some friends.

I’m excited! Once I get that up and running, this site will probably be moved over to the new host.

IPhone 4G and WWDC 2010

It’s been tradition that the iPhone is announced at WWDC… let’s hope that trend continues. The biggest things I’m looking forward to are the front facing camera and iPhone OS 4.0.

I’m really hoping they go back to the metal, blocky shape for the phone. I really liked the look and feel of the first iPhone and was dissappointed when they decided to go with the curved plastic instead.

It’d be great to see iPhone go to verizon… But then again, I wouldn’t get it because I want to be able to use the idroid on the old model.

Tethering is also a feature that’s supposed to come this summer (but then again, that’s what they said last year…) and it really annoys me that AT&T took away their unlimited data plan because “98% of people never go above 2 gigabytes of data”. Then why not let those 2% who do have it? It’s not like it really hurts the network. But on top of that, they want you to pay for the ability to tether…. Which means they’re making you pay twice for the SAME DATA.

And this is why we have jailbreaking.

As a side note: Cupidtino also launches Monday.

So as it turns out, the touch screen doesn’t like to work. I’m keeping my eye on the forums, but so far there is no solution. But here are some pictures!

Thinking About Segregation: Separate But Equal.. ish

So I like the idea of it. My main thought, though, is that I may want to wait until I switch over to a different host. Having a separate blog for personal stuff as compared to nerd stuff would probably be beneficial; then I could actually promote it as a tech site.

Anywho, I want to get some feedback on this idea. Should I separate them? Should tech stuff or personal stuff stay at TheLostChinese.org? What should the other one be called?

iDroid: up and … Crawling

Not exactly worthy of the title “Android Device” quite yet.

The process was similar to JailBreaking an iPhone/iPod touch when it first came out.. Before ZiPhone and RedSn0w and Pwnage tool and whatnot. Had to go in and FTP a bunch of files over then run some stuff in terminal and boom, it was done.

Problems so far:

No standby mode – extremely inefficient and battery only lasts about an hour.
Can’t turn it off – don’t exactly know the solution to this yet.
Extremely Slow – I can’t even describe how slow this is.

I like it, but it needs a LOT of polishing before it’s a primary boot. I’ll take pictures once it unfreezes.

Just can’t seem to let go. I tell myself I will and it works for a couple days, then all of a sudden, something will remind me and I’ll go right back to where I was. This sucks.

iDroid

So anyone in the world knows about the Apple iPhone. Anyone in the tech world knows that the Apple App Store is a closed market place governed by Apple, often unjustly. Wouldn’t it be great to run an open-source operating system? Like say.. Android?

iDroid project is after just that. Right now, they have it functioning on the original iPhone (2G) and the iPhone 3G. Granted, there are a few problems with it and it will be a while before it’s very practical, but none the less, it’s still a very cool idea and a very much appreciated endeavor. I hope to install it sometime this week and I’ll post a more in-depth and hands-on review of it, but it’s something I’m very much looking forward to. Almost as much as the new iPhone, which will hopefully be announced next week.

Slow Motions

So the whole “moving of the site” deal is taking a LOT longer than I thought it would. There’s a bunch of stuff I have to do and every time I think about it, I just want to go find a couple hundred dollars and host it at bluehost.com.

BlueHost, by the way, looks to be awesome. Unlimited storage, unlimited domains… almost too good to be true.. if they didn’t have good reviews at other websites, I would call SPAM… but they seem to be legit. I’m excited about the whole Ulimited Domain thing… I may have to buy a few more xD.

Too bad this all costs money.. not too much.. only about $100 per year for hosting… so add in a few domains and it’s still only $150.

This would be so much easier if I still had my own server to do this kinda stuff on. As crappy as my server was, the backend was great to maintain… but the Consumer Side was crap. Still I really liked working on it.
